Ecodesign software tool for dairy products

LIFE ECOLAC Project has developed a software tool to evaluate environmental impact and economic costs of dairy products and develop ecodesign strategies in dairy industry.

The results of the tool have been validated by AZTI comparing them with the Life Cycle Assessment tool SIMAPRO.

Moreover, the tool is totally flexible to final data plant configuration, it can be customized in order to represent the diagram of the final plant. Also, data introduction has been simplified because they can be imported directly from the information system of the plant.

The results obtained from the tool are the following:

  • Environmental and economic impacts of dairy products
  • Comparison between impacts of some dairy products
  • Ecodesign of dairy products

Results are shown in graphics and tables which can be exported to Excel with the detail level as user need. On the basis of the information supplied, user can identify processes of the product’s Life Cycle with greater Environmental impact, create scenarios of the Life Cycle and evaluate the viability of proposed changes regarding overall costs.

On October 27, 2016 the third follow-up meeting of the LIFE – Ecolac Project was held in n Central Lechera Asturiana's Granda-Siero production plant. There, the outcomes of this project and the actions being carried out were presented.

  • Ecodesign software tool: After the development of the tool, it was validated with a Life cycle analysis tool, SIMAPRO. The results obtained from the validation were successful without remarkable differences in the comparison. The tool, thefore, meets the objectives set out in the project.
  • Eco-designed yogurt: The ecodesign of this product was carried out with the new eco-design product. Once improvement actions were identified and introduced in the tool, it has been proven that environmental impacts were reduced.

Improvements included in the eco-design are the following:

  • Change of packaging: Polypropylene is the new material of the packaging, in order to lower the environmental impact. Furthermore, a new packaging machine were installed, which produces less plastic waste
